Review “Open Throat” by Henry Hoke

Open Throat by Henry Hoke is a queer fiction book, based on a mountain lion and his experience in the collision of his world with the big LA.

In this short novel, Hoke shows diverse characters—from other mountain lion to all types of humans, a girl, homeless people, and hikers. Touching political themes as how the big cities are making life harder to wildlife, the worries and diversity of common people in a monstrous city of millions, the meaning of friendship—all of this from the view of a queer puma. The atmosphere keeps the curiosity with a light reading style.

The book is gorgeous; though short, it evokes the feeling that the author is talking about P-22 a mountain lion who lived in Griffith Park, LA, since 2012 to 2022. For readers who love nature and something like the sparkles of diversity, this book is a great recommendation—4.5 of 5.
